Since 1920, there have been 116 victors in the NFL/AFL/AAFC/APFA professional football leagues as recognized by https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/
NFL-National Football League
AFL-American Football League
AAFC-All America Football Conference
APFA-American Professional Football Association
This includes:
The two champions of the 1920-1921 APFA:
The four champions of the 1946-1949 AAFC:
The ten champions of the 1960-1969 AFL:
The forty-eight champions of the 1922-1969 NFL:
The fifty-two champions of the 1966-2017 Super Bowl:
There have been 103 championship games.
A championship game was not played in the years 1920-1932. The champion was the team with the best winning percentage during
the season.
In the years 1966-69, I gave recognition to the AFL champion, the NFL champion and the Super Bowl Champion.
With the Los Angeles Rams versus the New England Patriots participating in the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 03, 2019, it
marks the twelfth time we have a three-word opponent versus a three-word opponent.
Of those 116 champions, 46 teams needed a three-word description. The 1926 Frankford Yellow Jackets and the 1928 Providence
Steam Roller are the only teams with a two word nickname. All 44 others need two words to describe their city or area of
the country they represent.
The Green Bay Packers participated in seven of those contests, winning six.
The New York Giants also participated in seven of those contests, winning three.
The New England Patriot participated in four of those contests, losing three. The two losses to the Giants are most notable.
The Green Bay Packers defeated the New York Giants four times.
The New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers once.
A three-word team lost in the championship game thirty-five times. The New York Giants lead that list with twelve. Eleven
of those losses occurred between 1933 and 1963 (5 in 6 years between 1958-1963).
Of the 116 champions, 87 were based in cities east of the Mississippi River and 28 were based west. The Mississippi River
runs through the city of New Orleans.
Of the losers of the 103 championship games, 67 were based in cities east of the Mississippi River and 36 were based west.
Of the 116 champions, 37 had nicknames of birds, fish or animals. I considered a Charger as an animal. I did not include
Cardinals. Cardinal was the original color of their uniform. The Cardinal bird was added later. The Bills were named after
Buffalo Bill.
I viewed forty-three of the victors as a person.
Thirty-four champions were classified as a profession. (Packers, Steam Roller, Jets, Cowboys, Oilers, Pros, Staleys, Steelers,
Texans). The Cardinals are classified as a color.
Of the 103 losers of the championship games, we have 38 birds, fish or animals. We have two colors. We have 51 persons and
12 professions.
The total number of points scored by the victors of the 103 championship games is 2,980 for an average of 28.932 points per
game.
The total number of points scored by the losers of the 103 championship games is 1,401 for an average of 13.602 points per
game.
The lowest point total for a victor is 7 by the 1948 Philadelphia Eagles (7-0 over the Chicago Cardinals).
The highest point total for a victor is 73 by the 1940 Chicago Bears in their 73-0 victory over the Washington Redskins.
The Highest point total for a loser is the 33 points the Patriots scored against the Eagles in February 2018.
Eight teams have been shutout in the championship game.
The last time the LOS ANGELES RAMS were in the super bowl was January 20, 1980. Five foot ten inch, 195 pound, Rams running
back Wendell Tyler wore an adidas brand cleat on his left foot and a Pony brand cleat on his right foot.
Nike Stock issued its Initial Public Offering on December 02, 1980. The price was 15 cents per share. If you bet $1000 on
the Rams to win that super bowl, you would have bupkiss. If you invested $1000 in Nike Stock 10 ½ months later, you would
have $52,154,783 as of October 23, 2018.
Even after nearly 100 years of professional football, certain things are true.
Sammy Baugh was the greatest football player of all time. Until another player can achieve all-pro status on offense, defense
and as a punter, Baugh will remain at the top.
Using that same argument, concrete Chuck Bednarik has to be included among the greatest of all time.
Even though many of the following players played all, of most, of their career before the so-called "modern era" of the super
bowl, they still rank at or near the top of their position.
Jim Brown is the greatest running back.
Dick Butkus is the greatest middle linebacker .
David Deacon Jones is one of the top three defensive ends along with Reggie White and Bruce Smith.
Lance Alworth is the most graceful and elegant receiver and runner.
Merlin Olson and Bob Lilly are among the top five defensive tackles.
Jim Parker, Jonathan Ogden and Anthony Munoz are the three best offensive tackles.
Gayle Sayers, Daryle Lamonica, Dick Butkus and Lance Alworth have the four best highlight reels on NFL films.
Green Bay Packer guards Fuzzy Thurston and Jerry Kramer led the consistently best play in professional football. “When
you look at this play, what we are trying to get is a seal here and a seal here, and try to run this play IN THE ALLEY.”
Sincerely,
George Sarkisian
